The Miracle Hath Arrived
A simple medieval village spread out into its own little cultures and means. A collective of town elders that gather when something large happens but otherwise are just keep to themselves. They have collections of druids which gather medicine and in general keep up the health and spiritual lives of the villagers. Coming of Age, Weddings, etc. Otherwise it is a quiet, nearly idolic life.
Then the comet came. Streaking down from the heavens an almighty crash laid waste the the surrounding areas. Fire reached far and wide and many of the villages were laid to waste. The capital (if one could call any village on this planet such) was directly hit. After the surrounding villagers searched for weeks. There were no survivors.
That was when the miracle appeared. Weeks after the villagers had buried their dead. They had returned. The site of their grave, the capital, had become one massive living tree. So large that it blot out the sun over the city. Each of those taken by the crash had been restored. Though their appearance had changed greatly, (Mostly due to the wood now running through their bodies) they at least were the same, at first.
It wasn’t until the following month that the madness began. Some just had some vague confusion, memories being skewed. Others were lost entirely to the madness. Still for those who had lost their loved ones, they had been returned!
The Red Wall: This is a huge wall of living trees which slowly bleed. This wood keeps all of the horrors within the forest from reaching the village at the foot the Great Tree.
The Great Tree: A tree so large it can be seen from orbit. This tree blots out the sun and shades the Great City. This tree reaches into the stars and is often where Spelljammers dock as its impossible to move goods through the dense canopy of the Darkwood.
The Darkwood: A place where the trees are so gnarled together that the suns light cannot touch within. There horrid creatures gather, twisted by the great tree. There are also wonders, hidden within the grove, both sacred and potentially profane. This is what lies beyond the Red Wall.
The Deer with Two Mouths: A huge deer that stalks the darkwood. Its belly and ribs have been malformed into a second mouth and is capable of swallowing a man. It has been known to swallow and then run off with villagers.
The Watcher: A monster made of just a huge cape and lanterns. It has been known to steal the souls of those who wander the darkwood. It can be seen watching from the forest often, though it rarely ventures into the small villages scattered in the darkwood.
