The neogi are small, intelligent creatures that resemble a cross between wolf spiders and moray eels. They have no known home world or colonies, existing almost entirely in enclaves aboard marauding spider-shaped spelljamming ships. They are utterly and irredeemably evil, seeing all other races as simply food and fodder. They use their psychic powers to enslave any creatures they deem useful and devour the rest. If they engage in negotiation or anything less than outright hostility, it is only because they are outmatched; at the first opportunity, they will break any agreements they have made in favor of conquest.
The favored slaves of the neogi are umber hulks, which they train from birth for use as shock troops and bodyguards. The neogi use umber hulk slaves as a form of prestige in what passes as a “society” for them, and failure to keep at least one umber hulk slave results in becoming a slave oneself.
The neogi have no central government. In their view, all creatures, even members of their own race, are property to be owned. Each gathering of neogi has one “overmaster,” to which all other neogi within that grouping are considered slaves. Whenever two or more independent gatherings of neogi come into contact, they must determine who the overmaster is, a process that involves pitting their slaves against each other in ritual combat. Once an overmaster has been decided, the losing contenders are eaten.
