¶ Summary
Since time immemorable, a vast and terrifying monstrosity the size of a small planet has drifted through the cosmos, consuming all in its path. Pantheons of gods only whet its appetite for the destruction of worlds, and entire civilizations and multi-world alliances have expended themselves in vain trying to slay the behemoth.
Accepting that the World-Eater could not be stopped, Harbinger Station was established by a consortium of heroic organizations. Anchored to the skin of the monstrosity, this port-castle serves multiple roles; it keeps track of the World-Eater, provides a base from which scholars can continue researching potential ways to kill it, acts as a barracks for the guards who keep nefarious powers from attempting to control the leviathan for their own dread purposes, and functions as a warning and rescue outpost for worlds in the monster's path.
¶ Heads Up, Your End is Nigh
When the astromancers on Harbinger Station determine that the World-Eater has set a course for an inhabited world, a warning team is quickly dispatched to alert its denizens and see if any kind of rescue is possible. There's only so many resources that even an organization funded by major galactic powers can spend, so full evacuation of a world is rare. However, Harbinger Station will help a world arrange whatever response it chooses, from defiant last stands to preserving a museum of cultural artifacts to rehoming what refugees survive the impending apocalypse.
¶ Preserving Hope
Many scholars have given up on trying to slay the World-Eater, but for those who still dedicate themselves to studying the terror of the cosmos, Harbinger Station is the best possible research platform. The resident researchers welcome fresh insights and perspectives from traveling adventurers, and are frequently in need of daring teams to travel inside the beast as escorts for a science team, or to gather materials for further study.
Additionally, the World-Eater represents the most powerful weapon in the cosmos, should someone figure out how to control it. Numerous power-hungry organizations, would-be tyrants, and destructive cults have attempted to do so in the past, and the fear that they may one day succeed weighs heavy on the minds of cosmic-level heroes. Harbinger Station serves as a defense against this dread possibility, and occasionally summons heroes to its banner to fight off aspiring beast masters.
